This summer DFW TEC provided an engineering internship for incoming 9th grade students at the following selected schools: Berkner STEM Academy in Richardson, Conrad STEM Academy in Dallas, Jack E. Singley Academy in Irving, and METSA STEM Academy in Carrollton.

High school students participate in this interactive program designed to increase student interest in and understanding of the technologies and skills required for a career in engineering and advanced technology.  Participants will take field trips and participate in hands-on engineering design challenges.

With the supervision of an educator, energetic college engineering students mentor more than 200 high school students through this exciting program.

According to the 2009 survey results, students showed a remarkable increase in their aspiration to go to college: Before 55% were sure they were going to college, after the internship it jumped to a remarkable 70%!

Students also increased in their readiness for higher level math and science courses: before 78% were sure they were ready for higher level courses, after the internship it made a 10% jump to 88%!

Students also gained a new level of confidence with technology: 39% were confident with technology prior to the internship, 65% were confident with technology after the internship.

Ninth grade students entering the schools listed above are eligible to apply for the program. Application forms are available through the selected schools hosting the program. For additional information about all DFW TEC programs, please contact Janet Butler, jbutler@dfwtec.org.
